What did Google change in AI Search?
On October 15, 2026, Google announced several updates on the official Google Blog for AI Mode and AI Overviews (AI-generated summary answers displayed above classic search results). AI Mode is a dedicated area within Google Search where an AI answers questions conversationally and links to websites. In Germany and the DACH region, AI Mode has been available in German since October 8, 2025 according to Google’s DACH launch announcement.
The update focuses on making source websites more visible inside AI answers: inline links embedded directly within the response text will appear more frequently and higher up. Related links at the bottom of certain answers also receive thumbnail previews and a more prominent visual layout. In addition, Google is expanding article carousels to more languages and countries while highlighting user-selected "Preferred Sources"—a feature that Google says more than seven times as many people use compared to the start of the year.
Google explicitly describes two further additions as tests: first, a dedicated section at the very top of an answer that highlights the official website for a specific task and explains why that link is helpful; second, clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode that lead to their Search profiles. Google’s announcement does not include a country rollout list.
Can you control whether your website appears in AI answers?
Yes. In Google Search Console (Google’s free management tool for site owners), the Search generative AI control is available under Settings. According to Google, it rolled out worldwide on August 31, 2026 and governs whether your property appears in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Google Discover.
Opting out means your website will not receive links, impressions, or traffic from those generative AI features. According to Google, this setting is not a ranking signal for standard Google Search results and does not affect AI training (for which Google points publishers to Google-Extended); full removal from Google Search still requires noindex. Changes typically take effect within one to two days, though caching can occasionally cause longer delays.
On October 21, 2026, Google also updated its Search Central documentation Control what you share with Google Search to list this control alongside existing indexing rules. As noted in an industry report by PPC Land, the Search Console toggle applies to the entire property rather than individual URLs. However, Google’s documentation confirms that individual pages or passages can be restricted using standard snippet rules (`nosnippet`, `data-nosnippet`, `max-snippet`).
| Search Console Setting | Impact on Your Website (per Google) |
|---|---|
| Include links and content (Default) | Your website can appear as a source and link in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover generative AI features, receiving impressions and traffic. |
| Exclude links and content | No display, links, impressions, or traffic from these AI features (usually effective within 1–2 days; no impact on classic rankings or AI training). |
| Inherit setting from parent property | Automatically adopts the setting configured on the parent domain or URL-prefix property unless manually overridden. |
How do you measure your visibility in AI Search?
Also available worldwide since August 31, 2026 is the Generative AI performance report (Search) in Search Console. It tracks impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by pages, countries, devices, search type, and date. If the report is not visible in your account, your property either has too few impressions in generative AI features or has been excluded.
One key limitation: according to Google’s official documentation—and highlighted in an industry analysis by Searcle.ai—this report currently shows impressions only, without click counts or click-through rates (CTR).
What does this mean for your business?
Our assessment: Because Google is placing source links higher inside AI responses and testing dedicated highlights for official websites, structured GEO (Generative Engine Optimization—preparing website content specifically for AI answers) is becoming more valuable. Businesses that present clear, authoritative pages stand to benefit as cited sources. Opting out in Search Console forfeits this visibility without helping classic search rankings and is rarely sensible for small and medium-sized businesses. While no one can guarantee placement in AI answers, a clean technical foundation puts your site in the best position. Our recommendation:
- 1Check Search Console: Verify your property access and confirm that the Search generative AI control is set to the default (“Include”).
- 2Review the generative AI performance report: Check which of your pages already earn impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- 3Build clear “official” pages for core tasks: During a website relaunch or technical upgrade via Next.js development in Berlin, provide clear service pages, contact details, opening hours, pricing, processes, and structured data.
- 4Answer questions directly: Structure guides and service pages with a concise direct answer at the top, backed by primary sources, author attribution, and an up-to-date status date—as demonstrated in our recent article on the Digital Omnibus and cookie banners.
